Last time we featured some 25th Anniversary material from 1991, and we continue with the look back to that time period with today's entry; from issue #175 of Starlog comes this article on my favorite communications officer, Uhura, as portrayed by Nichelle Nichols..(Who still owns the role, I might add.)
(Click on images to enlarge; once open, you may have to click on it again to view full-size.)
Bonus: below, a couple of photos gleaned from around the web from Nichelle's early days as a stage performer, doing what she does best; dancing!
Bonus #2: Below, from Starlog, a hilarious cartoon that looks at one of the most out-of-character moments for Spock in the entire series. At the end of the great episode "The Enemy Within," Spock, while signing off on a report for Janice Rand, says the line below with an uncharacteristically creepy leer. I know the episode was an early effort, when not all the characters were nailed down yet, but the line is something that would have been unsavory coming from anyone, much less Spock. Even coming from Kirk himself it would have been weird, if not completely unexpected. But
Spock? It's like he was mentioning the unpleasantness in such a slimy way in order to see if he could get in on some of that action himself.
Not cool.
Bonus #3: below, a page from a magazine article featuring a rare color photo of Nimoy as Spock on the bridge.
I'm still trying to grasp that the 25th anniversary was 22-years-ago, which means the 50th anniversary is only three years off! Yikes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting these. Always interesting, although please no more articles with Whoopi Goldberg in them. : -)
reading Nicols comments about a possible VII there, i remember there was discussion/comments from the cast after filming Trek VI that it went so well there might be a VII with them ...obviously VI did alot more box office and had much better reviews than V so maybe it was a possiblity
ReplyDeletemaybe Paramount shouldn’t have been so keen to bury TOS and focus on TNG spin offs, e.g. if they hadn’t bothered with DS9 or VOY and instead done another couple of years of TNG until 1996 which could have allowed for another film with the original cast for 1993 or 94 (something along the lines of Shatners 'Ashes of Eden' maybe directed by N Meyer or even Nimoy again. In fact I re-read the AOE comic the other night and it really does feel like an official DC comic adaptation for an unmade Trek VII) and then introduced the TNG crew with a 'Generations' film in 1996 for the 30th anniversary (more Yesterdays Enterprise/All Good Things than what was done).
then started the standalone TNG movies in 98 with First Contact (or maybe not even bothered with a crossover movie at all and just had Trek VII with the original cast in 93/94 and FC as was in 96)
a shame they finished making movies with the original cast when they did. In fact Shatner and Nimoy would have only been 65 if they had been in a final crossover film in 1996. the same age H Ford was in the last Indy!
Anon,
ReplyDeletethanks for commenting, I agree that they stopped using the original cast too soon! But I guess they felt they wanted it to go out on a high note. I just wish we had gotten a new series after the first movie rather than a new movie every few years.
As many issues as I have with the NuTrek, I have to admit I would rather see our TOS characters on the big screen than anyone else such as those from the spinoff series or a new crew.
I love the comic with Spock and Rand on the impostor Kirk's 'interesting qualities'! Too bad she didn't do that on the actual TV show! What exactly were the script writers thinking at the end of Enemy Within is still beyond me! I understand that Grace Lee Whitney disliked the ending of that episode, even years after the fact.
